A recent article, published by "American Dairymen" (February 2010) Jill Faser, Technical Manager with Feed Products North, Inc., evaluated the efficacy of mineral dietary supplements on rumen fermentation by measuring pH and gas production in vitro rumen fluid overtime to 24 hours, and taking initial measurement of mineral reactivity. Results of these preliminary incubations indicate gas production was greatest and a more optimal pH was maintained by sodium bicarbonate than any other supplement to have the greatest effect on rumen fermentation.
